Globalization and Development

Through its programme on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD contributes to the international debate on globalization and the management of its consequences for developing countries. The programme promotes policies at the national, regional and international level that are conducive to stable economic growth and sustainable development. It regularly examines the trends and prospects in the world economy, undertakes studies on the requirements for successful development strategies and on the debt problems of developing countries.

It also provides technical support to developing countries in their efforts to integrate into the international financial system and to manage their external debt

Speaking to the Member States, Chair of the National Preparatory Committee for UNCTAD XIII, said the coming quadrennial conference was an opportunity to "truly demonstrate and exercise political will and leadership" in promoting the development of humanity.

02 Mar 2012 - UNCTAD S-G calls for inclusive growth strategies at World Marketing Summit

At the first World Marketing Summit held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 1 March 2012, UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi called for inclusive growth strategies and "development-led marketing". He also underlined the need for building moral and social values in marketing.

Addressing the Berlin International Economic Congress on 7 March 2012, UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi said an ever more complex international division of labour embedded in the phenomenon of globalization needs a strong social contract, with strong moral and political foundations, if the outcomes are to be inclusive and sustainable.
