On his first official state visit since assuming office at UNCTAD, Secretary-General Supachai went to China from 7 to 9 September. In Xiamen, he took part in the International Fair for Investment and Trade, cosponsored by the Chinese government, UNCTAD, WAIPA, UNIDO and the International Finance Corporation. The event is a unique combination of high-level investment forum (at which Dr. Supachai delivered the keynote speech), seminars and workshops, policy dialogues on topical investment issues, investment promotion encounters and exhibitions. It is a valuable platform for FDI policy makers, businesses, investment promotion agencies and investment service providers from all over the world. Over 8,000 participants attended the Fair this year.
UNCTAD organized four events for the occasion: a presentation on the just-released Trade and Development Report 2005
, a roundtable of investment promotion agencies, presentations on global FDI prospects
and trends in international investment agreements
, and a workshop on investment promotion through the clean development mechanism.
Dr. Supachai also met with Wen Jiabao, Prime Minister of China; Zeng Peiyan, Deputy Prime Minister; and Bo Xilai, Minister of Commerce, who complimented UNCTAD for its long-standing endeavours to promote development and expressed their appreciation for the excellent technical cooperation between UNCTAD and China. They also pledged strong support to the new Secretary-General and said that the role and functions of UNCTAD should be further strengthened.
