UNCTAD was part of the latest edition of the Central American Competition Forum, which was held in San Salvador from 29 to 30 August 2013.
UNCTAD staff presented views on how to move forward with regards to the enactment of the Regional Competition Law in Central America and provided lessons learned from other sub-regional groupings, such as the UEMOA project and the Andean Community of Nations.
As expressed in the Declaration, member countries of the Central American Competition Network thanked UNCTAD for support and discussions made during the deliberations of the Forum, including the presentation made by Mr. Gustavo Valbuena (GAE Member) regarding merger cases in the airline sector in Colombia.
As a follow-up to the meeting, Member States of the Central American Group requested UNCTAD to undertake a study on cross-border practices, particularly focusing on three sectors in Central America: Pharmaceuticals, Airlines and Financial Services.
This study will be carried out under the regional component of COMPAL II.
