Globalization, Interdependence and Development

Through its programme on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD contributes to the international debate on globalization and the management of its consequences for developing countries. The programme promotes policies at the national, regional and international level that are conducive to stable economic growth and sustainable development. It regularly examines the trends and prospects in the world economy, undertakes studies on the requirements for successful development strategies and on the debt problems of developing countries.

It also provides technical support to developing countries in their efforts to integrate into the international financial system and to manage their external debt

13 Sep 2012 - Launch of Trade and Development Report 2012: Policies for inclusive and balanced growth

UNCTAD Report explores the links between income distribution, growth and development, arguing that inequality is neither a necessary condition for sound economic growth, nor its natural result. Pro-active fiscal and income policies to reduce income gaps influence economic growth.

11 Sep 2012 - 12-week on-line training course on trade and poverty kicks off with 103 participants from 54 countries

The UNCTAD Virtual Institute kicked off its on-line course on trade and poverty yesterday, the first phase of a broader research capacity building project funded by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Government of Finland. The course will conclude on 30 November this year.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Uganda are currently attending a 9-day workshop in Kampala on domestic debt operations and management organised by UNCTAD in close cooperation with the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI).

23 Aug 2012 - Norway to audit debt on basis of UNCTAD principles

The Minister of International Development of Norway, H.E. Mr. Heikki Holmås, announced last Friday that Norway would carry out an audit of developing countries’ debts to Norway, and a review of the loans that Norway has made, on the basis of the Principles on Promoting Responsible Sovereign Lending and Borrowing consolidated by UNCTAD.

22 Aug 2012 - North-West University of South Africa joins UNCTAD Virtual Institute as 31st affiliate member

The North-West University (NWU), one of the largest public academic institutions in South Africa, is the latest addition to the UNCTAD Virtual Institute's affiliate network. Along with core member, the University of Pretoria, and affiliate member, Stellenbosch University, the NWU is the third institution to represent South Africa in the Virtual Institute.

21 Aug 2012 - UNCTAD-MEFMI regional workshop in Harare moves forward on debt data validation procedures

The yearly joint workshop of the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) and UNCTAD's Debt Management and Financial Analysis System (DMFAS) Programme was held in Harare, Zimbabwe, in June on debt data validation.
