Globalization, Interdependence and Development

Through its programme on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD contributes to the international debate on globalization and the management of its consequences for developing countries. The programme promotes policies at the national, regional and international level that are conducive to stable economic growth and sustainable development. It regularly examines the trends and prospects in the world economy, undertakes studies on the requirements for successful development strategies and on the debt problems of developing countries.

It also provides technical support to developing countries in their efforts to integrate into the international financial system and to manage their external debt

30 May 2013 - UNCTAD, jointly with Government of Kazakhstan and Eurasian Economic Club of Scientists, organizes event titled Fifty Years of Development: What Have We Learned?

At the sixth Astana Economic Forum and first World Anti-Crisis Conference, held on 23-24 May 2013 in Astana, Kazakhstan, UNCTAD and the Government of Kazakhstan, through the Eurasian Economic Club of Scientists, co-organized a lunch event titled Fifty Years of Development: What Have We Learned.

19 Apr 2013 - UNCTAD’s Virtual Institute gains ninth LDC university member

The University of the Gambia (UTG) has become the forty-fourth core university member of the Virtual Institute (Vi), and the ninth academic institution to represent a Least Developed Country in the network.

11 Apr 2013 - Seventeenth Colombian university joins Virtual Institute network

Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ), which is one of Colombia's oldest universities and was founded in 1623, has joined the Virtual Institute (Vi) network, bringing the Vi's Colombian membership count to 17.

28 Mar 2013 - Bulgarian university becomes forty-second core Virtual Institute member

The University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia, Bulgaria, has joined UNCTAD's Virtual Institute (Vi), increasing the number of Eastern European countries represented in the network to five.

07 Mar 2013 - First university from an Asian LDC joins Vi network

Bangladesh's Jagannath University (JNU) has become the 73rd university member of the Virtual Institute (Vi), joining Vi think tanks the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute and the Centre for Policy Dialogue to become the third institution to represent the country in UNCTAD's programme for academic cooperation.

04 Mar 2013 - Ghanaian university expands Virtual Institute's reach to 43 countries

Ghana's University of Cape Coast (UCC) today joined the Virtual Institute (Vi), becoming the Vi's fortieth core university member and the thirteenth country to represent sub-Saharan Africa in the network. The initiative was taken by UCC senior lecturer Camara Kwasi Obeng, a graduate of the Vi's online course on trade and poverty held last year.

24 Jan 2013 - UNCTAD to lead post-2015 e-discussion on development-led globalization

The United Nations is organizing a series of consultations on various themes to support governments to agree on a post-2015 development agenda for when the Millennium Development Goals expire. Growth and employment is one of these thematic areas.
