Globalization, Interdependence and Development

Through its programme on Globalization and Development Strategies, UNCTAD contributes to the international debate on globalization and the management of its consequences for developing countries. The programme promotes policies at the national, regional and international level that are conducive to stable economic growth and sustainable development. It regularly examines the trends and prospects in the world economy, undertakes studies on the requirements for successful development strategies and on the debt problems of developing countries.

It also provides technical support to developing countries in their efforts to integrate into the international financial system and to manage their external debt

Palestinian Ministers and senior officials have expressed appreciation for UNCTAD's role in supporting the development of the Palestinian economy through its technical cooperation projects that aim at building capacities and helping to overcome the persistent challenges.

27 Jul 2012 - Finance ministerial in Dominican Republic hears presentation on Principles of responsible sovereign financing

The Council of Ministers of Finance of Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic (COSEFIN) invited UNCTAD to present the Principles on Promoting Responsible Sovereign Lending and Borrowing at its session in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on 25 July.

10 Jul 2012 - Kenyan university and German think tank the latest to join UNCTAD Virtual Institute

Moi University, the second oldest university in Kenya, and the German Development Institute (DIE), one of the world's leading development think tanks, joined the Virtual Institute recently, expanding the institutional membership to 75 universities and think tanks from 39 countries.

04 Jul 2012 - Joint UNCTAD-WTO handbook launched on trade policy analysis

A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis, co-published by the WTO and UNCTAD's Virtual Institute has been launched. WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy and UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi describe it as a "state-of-the-art" tool for policy analysis and a contribution to a more level playing field in trade relations.

UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Pantichpakdi is presently in New York to attend the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) where the High-level policy dialogue with the international financial and trade institutions on current developments in the world economy is being held on Tuesday, 3 July.

18 May 2012 - UNCTAD S-G at UN General Assembly debate on state of world economy and finance

Delivering a keynote address at the round table on "Reducing debt vulnerability, managing inflation/deflation," UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi called for attention to be given to deflationary pressures, a systemic approach to debt vulnerability, adequate regulatory system for banks, and regulatory oversight of credit rating agencies.
