Visit by senior Chinese official to prepare for Global Services Forum

A visiting senior Chinese official helped to brief participants at UNCTAD's Multi-year Expert Meeting on Trade, Services and Development about preparations for the Global Services Forum, which is to be held on 28 and 29 May in Beijing.


Ni Yuegang, Deputy Director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce, joined Guillermo Valles, Director of UNCTAD's Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities, to provide the update at the briefing organized jointly by UNCTAD and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.

In addition, Mr. Ni carried out extensive consultations with Mr. Valles and other UNCTAD experts in the course of further planning for the Forum.

The Global Services Forum, the theme of which is Services: A New Frontier for Sustainable Development, is to be held concurrently with the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) that will run in Beijing from 28 May to 1 June. A joint Opening Ceremony is planned, and Heads of State and other high-level participants are expected to attend.

The Global Services Forum is jointly organized by UNCTAD, the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, and the People's Government of Beijing Municipality.

In addition to the Opening Ceremony, the Global Services Forum will feature two Summits with participation by government ministers and leaders of the private sector.

The first Summit will focus on Visions on the Global Services Economy and Trade in Services in the 21st Century, and the second on An Enabling Environment for Services and Services Trade.

The Forum will include four high-level sessions, which will focus on:

  1. Services and Job Creation
  2. Services and Value Added
  3. Building Supply and Export Capacity: The Case of Outsourcing Services
  4. Creating and Promoting Partnerships
