UNCTAD S-G congratulates new head of UN-ECA

Dr. Carlos Lopes, Executive Director of the U.N. Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) based in Geneva will be taking up his new position as Executive Secretary of the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa on 1 September. UNCTAD Secretary-General Supachai Panitchpakdi has sent Dr. Lopes a letter of congratulations

Dr. Lopes, a national of Guinea Bissau, has served as UNDP Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative in Brazil and Zimbabwe. While in Brazil, Dr. Lopez participated actively at the UNCTAD XI Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2004.


He holds a PhD in history from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a research master from the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.

Dr. Lopes will succeed Mr. Abdoulie Janneh of The Gambia to whom the UNCTAD Secretary-General has sent a letter of appreciation.

As a non-resident U.N. agency, UNCTAD collaborates with UN-ECA in launching its major reports in Africa and in organizing training and capacity building activities in support of countries in the region.

In his letter of congratulations, the UNCTAD Secretary-General expressed his confidence that the close working relationship and collaboration between UNCTAD and UN-ECA will continue to be strengthened for the benefit of African countries. UNCTAD expects to deepen its collaboration with UN-ECA, in particular in the implementation of the African Union Action Plan for boosting intra-African trade.
