Status of trade in nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement

The long-term climate and temperature-related goals under the Paris Agreement are implemented through nationally determined contributions, that is, the actions each country intends to take to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. All Parties are expected to prepare, communicate and update their nationally determined contributions. Trade and trade-related measures can play an important role in implementing mitigation and adaptation actions and in supporting the transition towards a low-carbon economy, particularly in developing countries. The course will present the following:

  • The legal nature, composition and structure of nationally determined contributions and an analysis of how trade and trade-related measures have been incorporated, with practical examples, including how to green the African Continental Free Trade Area
  • A deeper view of the case for decarbonizing fishing fleets, ports and the seafood value chain as an illustrative example of an integrated sectoral approach to how nationally determined contributions can cover mitigation, adaptation and hybrid measures when relevant to trade, food security and conservation
  • The applicable multilateral regulatory environment, available low-carbon and zero-carbon technologies, practical case studies in the field of fisheries and potential policy recommendations for developing countries, particularly the least developed countries and small island developing States
