ISAR Membership

ECOSOC established ISAR in 1982 as a body that allows for 34 formal ISAR members to serve three-year terms. These 34 members include nine African, seven Asian, six Latin American, three Eastern European, and nine Western European and other States. Member States may appoint any expert from their country as their nominated representative in ISAR. Representatives typically come from the Ministry responsible for accounting and reporting issues, from securities and financial regulatory agencies, or from national accounting associations.

Note that all member countries of the United Nations are able to send representatives to ISAR sessions, and that ISAR membership carries no financial obligations

Benefits of formal membership

Formal members of ISAR would be given a priority role in participating in ISAR annual sessions (including bureau activities such as chairmanship), consultative group and ad hoc meetings, workshops and training events. During the intersessional period of ISAR, members would have the opportunity to provide inputs in the preparations of the annual ISAR session, the direction of its activities, and ways to enhance its outreach.

Application Process

Member States interested in formal membership should contact their Permanent Mission in New York or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in their capital and request them to submit the candidacy for election to ISAR. The letter requesting membership needs to be addressed to the Chair of the relevant regional group for the month, who are listed in the UN Journal, with copy to the ECOSOC secretariat in New York and the ISAR secretariat in Geneva.
