Background to the project

Background to the project

The UNCTAD-ICC project on investment guides and capacity-building for LDCs was launched in 1998.

Phase 1:
The pilot phase covered five countries:
 Bangladesh    Mozambique
 Ethiopia    Uganda

This phase, made possible by the financial support of China, Finland, France, India and Norway, was completed in 2001, with its final publication, An Investment Guide to Mozambique, appearing in January 2002.

An independent evaluation panel of five members - three of them representing the international business community - evaluated the pilot phase in 2001 and strongly endorsed extension of the project to a second phase.

Donors to the second phase include Finland, Italy, Norway, Sweden and UNDP Cambodia.

Phase 2:
The second phase has thus far included six countries:
 Cambodia (October 2003)    Mali1 (August 2004)
 Nepal (March 2003)    Ethiopia1 (June 2004)
 Mauritania (August 2004)    Uganda2 (Sept. 2004)

1The guides to Ethiopia and Mali will be revised editions in the new format.
2The guide to Uganda will be an update of the version published in 2001.
