Geneva, 27 March 2009 -- The 46th executive session of the UNCTAD´s Trade and Development Board (TDB) today unanimously elected Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, the Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, to the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, as President of the TDB for the term of April to September 2009.

The election of Ambassador Djani as the President of the TDB, to replace Ambassador Debapriya Bhattacharya of Bangladesh, was fully supported by the Asian Group of G-77 and China in UNCTAD.

The Session also endorsed the proposal of the Asian Group to have Mr. Jesús S. Domingo from the Permanent Mission of Philippines as the Vice-President, to replace Pakistan.

As President of the TDB, Ambassador Djani´s main task will be to follow up the implementation of the Accra Accord emanating from the UNCTAD XII Conference in Ghana in 2008, which covers the issues of the integrated treatment of trade and development, and the interrelated issues of finance, investment, technology and sustainable development.

As President, Ambassador Djani will chair the Board´s meetings until September 2009. He will also preside over the TDB President´s monthly consultations with members and the bureau, the Public Symposium for Civil Society in May 2009, and the 47th executive session in Africa in June 2009. Ambassador Djani will also participate in the Special High-Level Meeting of ECOSOC with the Bretton Woods institutions, WTO and UNCTAD in New York on 27 April 2009.

Ambassador Debapriya Bhattacharya of Bangladesh had served as President of the TDB since September 2008. "I would like to place on record my deep appreciation for the total commitment, enthusiasm and dedication with which he led UNCTAD´s follow-up to Accra," said Mr. Supachai, Secretary-General of UNCTAD.

The Trade and Development Board is the highest intergovernmental body of UNCTAD between Conferences, which has decision-making, policy and governance functions.
