SUMMARY:Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on Climate change impacts and adaptation: a c
 hallenge for global ports
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION: Quick Links:Programme\, with links to PresentationsUnited Nat
ions Gateway on Climate ChangeNews item:Climate Change Impacts and Adaptat
ion: A Challenge for Global PortsWith over 80 per cent of the volume of wo
rld trade carried by sea\, international shipping and ports provide crucia
l linkages in global supply-chains and are essential for the ability of al
l countries\, including those that are landlocked\, to access global marke
ts.Ports are likely to be affected directly and indirectly by climatic cha
nges\, such as rising sea levels\, extreme weather events and rising tempe
ratures\, with broader implications for international trade and for the de
velopment prospects of the most vulnerable nations\, in particular LDCs an
d SIDS.Given their strategic role as part of the globalized trading system
\, adapting ports and transport systems in different parts of the world to
the impacts of climate change is of vital importance. A good understandin
g of risks and vulnerabilities is a pre-condition to well-designed and eff
ective adaptation response measures that enhance the resilience of systems
\, structures and processes and minimize the adverse effects of climatic f
actors. To help advance the important debate on how best to move forward\,
the Ad Hoc Expert meeting provides policy makers\, key public and private
sector stakeholders\, international organizations as well as scientists an
d engineers with a platform for discussion and an opportunity to share bes
 t practices.Contact:UNCTAD\, Trade Logistics BranchRegina.Asariotis@unctad
