DESCRIPTION:Side Event of UNISDR\, International Science Council (ISC)\, an
 d Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR)Effectively reducing disaster
  and climate risk is the vital basis for the achievement of long-term resi
 lience\, sustainable development and broader peace and security. This requ
 ires us to address the multiple\, complex and interrelated processes of ri
 sk creation and vulnerability as well as strengthening resilience through 
 stronger engagement across sectors\, and communities. The Sendai Framework
  for Disaster Risk Reduction\, adopted in 2015 by all UN Member States as 
 part of the broader 2030 agenda\, is the global blueprint for risk reducti
 on. With its cross-cutting nature and call for an all-of-society approach 
 to risk it can be seen as the connecting tissue between all 2030 agreement

 ssons learned from the disaster risk reduction community\, this session wi
 ll discuss the role of &#039\;engaged science&#039\; and new technologies 
 in helping communities to prepare and recover from the effects of a hazard
  but specifically to implement and define ex-ante actions that reduce disa
 ster risk in the long term and thereby build resilience\, prosperity and w
 ellbeing for all. Engaged science encompasses inter- and transdisciplinary
  approaches\, between science disciplines but also between academics and n
 on-academics for knowledge co-production\, mutual learning and problem-sol
 ving. It also encompasses the movement of open science making data and res
 earch results more accessible\, and of citizen science and public particip
 ation in data collection and analysis. Last but not least transformational
  change also requires the development of enabling policy and regulatory fr
 ameworks\, new financing approaches which break down silos and encourage c
 ollaboration. Objectives:To exemplify the strong link of disaster risk red
 uction with the CSTD 2019 priority themes: inclusive and empowered communi
 ties through rapid technological changes and citizen science.To highlight 
 opportunities and needs to enhance cross-disciplinary approaches to risk\,
  resilience and sustainable development.To highlight opportunities for the
  science community to drive the agenda in 2019\, including the discussions
  towards the High-Level Political Forum and UN Climate Summit.This side ev
 ent is linked to the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction\, hosted 
 by the Government of Switzerland on 13-17 May 2019 at the International Co
