SUMMARY:Workshop on sustainable and effective substitutes and alternatives
 for plastics
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The WTO\, in collaboration with UNCTAD\, is organising a Worksh
op on sustainable and effective substitutes and alternatives for plastics.
The objective of this workshop is planned to be a scoping\, stocktaking
\, and trade facilitation exercise of potential plastics substitutes and a
lternatives\, providing a strong technical base for intensified discussion
s on sustainable\, tradable\, and effective substitutes and alternatives f
or plastics. The results could also support the WTO Dialogue&#039\;s contr
ibution to the UNEA process.\n\nThe workshop will provide a basis for disc
ussion on a range of issues including\, inter alia:\n\n\nWorking definitio
ns \nMinimum criteria for life cycle analysis and affordability\, accessi
bility and availability \nIllustrative and extended list of material subs
titutes and material identification exercise\nHS code identification exerc
ise\, and trade-related measures enabling single-use plastic products (SUP
 P) and other &quot\;problematic&quot\; goods (e.g.\, textiles) substitutio
n by sustainable materials\n\n\nAs part of this event\, UNCTAD is hosting
one of the breakout sessions: ‘Illustrative and extended list of materia
l substitutes and material identification exercise’. UNCTAD has already
developed an initial mapping of potential material substitutes (presented
at previous IDP meetings). We are working on an expanded (non-exhaustive)
indicative list of substitute materials\, including life cycle analysis co
nsiderations to better support countries in trade facilitation measures fo
r promising materials and products that can play similar functions current
ly performed by plastics.\n\nThis WTO-UNCTAD workshop is informed by the r
eport Plastic Pollution: The pressing case for natural and environmentall
y friendly substitutes to plastics\, which was prepared under the Sustaina
ble Manufacturing and Environmental Pollution (SMEP) programme\, in collab
oration with UNCTAD Oceans Programme in 2023. \n\n \n&lt\;p&gt\;The WTO\
