SUMMARY:26th CSTD side event: Application of Satellite Technology to Suppor
 t Inclusive Implementation of the SDGs

DESCRIPTION:Crop monitoring with earth observation on a massive scale are n
 either easy nor inexpensive exercises. However\, both hold immense potenti
 al for better food security planning and progress toward Sustainable Devel
 opment Goals. Yet\, many developing countries do not have access to the re
 quired tools due to technology deficits or associated costs.\n\nAt the 23r
 d annual session of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technolog
 y for Development (CSTD)\, the United Nations focal point for science\, te
 chnology and innovation for development\, the Chinese Academy of Sciences 
 announced the CropWatch Innovative Cooperation Programme\, a South-South c
 ooperation project to help bridge this technology gap. This capacity-build
 ing initiative\, implemented by Aerospace Information Research Institute (
 AIR/CAS) in partnership with UNCTAD and funded by the Alliance of Internat
 ional Science Organizations (ANSO)\, began implementation at the beginning
  of 2021.\n\nDeveloping countries are offered technical assistance to acce
 ss the AIR’s earth observation-based system for crop monitoring and earl
 y food security warning. It will help developing countries monitor their c
 rops on their own in real- and near-time\, provide an infrastructure platf
 orm to synthesize those data to allow better food security planning\, and 
 enable customization to meet the specific needs of countries and regions.\
 n\nThe ICP-Cropwatch programme responds to the call in ECOSOC Resolution 2
 020/13 on science\, technology and innovation for development for increase
 d South-South cooperation through technical assistance\, capacity-building
 \, and technology transfer. It also strengthens the ECOSOC recommendation 
 after reviewing in 2021 and 2022 its subsidiary bodies\, including the CST
 D\, to continue aligning their work with the 2030 Agenda\, particularly Go
 al 2: Zero Hunger.\n\nAgainst this background\, UNCTAD\, ANSO\, and AIR-CA
 S are organizing a side-event to showcase the Cropwatch-ICP programme duri
 ng the 26th annual session of CSTD and identify potential countries that m
 ay be interested in participating in this programme.\n\n \n\nObjective \n
 \nIn line with the CSTD’s aim of promoting experience sharing and policy
  dialogue about emerging technologies as enablers of the 2030 Agenda\, thi
 s side event will present the CropWatch programme to CSTD member states to
  demonstrate the potential of satellite technology in the agricultural dom
 ain and for the achievement of SDG 2. This session will provide detailed i
 nformation about the experiences and best practices from the CropWatch pro
 gram for developing countries seeking to access satellite technology for c
 rop monitoring and food security purposes.\n\nIt will also discuss the tak
 eaways for multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnerships\, especially i
 n relation to technology transfer\, South-South cooperation\, and capacity
 -building.\n\n \n\nFormat of the session\n\nThe panel will begin with ope
 ning remarks by senior official from UNCTAD and ANSO\, followed by introdu
 ction of the CropWatch Innovative Cooperation Programme and its progress. 
 Then discussants from developing countries in Africa will provide their in
 terventions (5-7 minutes). After this\, the moderator will initiate an int
