SUMMARY:Ad Hoc Expert Meeting on Measuring Shipping Connectivity and Perfor
 mance: The Need for Statistics and Data

DESCRIPTION:The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (ASD)\, the Sustain
 able Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement have emphasi
 zed the need for all economic sectors\, including maritime transport to mo
 nitor and measure performance and track progress towards the achievement o
 f relevant economic\, social and environmental targets.\n\nIndicators meas
 uring the performance of the maritime transport sector with multidimension
 al metrics spanning a range of factors (e.g. efficiency\, cost-effectiven
 ess\, productivity\, profitability\, connectivity\, access\, social inclus
 iveness and environmental sustainability) are increasingly recognized as c
 ritical for maritime business and its users\, as well as for governments a
 nd policy makers.\n\nAs developing key indicators depends heavily on the a
 vailability and the quality of data and statistics\, addressing existing m
 aritime transport data gaps requires investing in acquiring\, compiling\, 
 making available and managing relevant data.\n\nAgainst this background th
 e UNCTAD secretariat is convening an ad hoc expert meeting on “Measuring
  Shipping Connectivity and Performance: The Need for Statistics and Data&q
 uot\;.\n\nThe meeting will bring together experts from varied backgrounds 
 to discuss the role of data in supporting performance-based approaches in 
 maritime transport and explore ways in which existing data limitations can
  be effectively addressed to support improved and sustainable planning and
  management of maritime transport activity as well as promote evidence-bas
 ed maritime transport policy making.\n\nIn addition to the 2030 ASD and SD
 Gs\, discussions will bear in mind the growing demand for data\, metrics a
 nd performance measures\, resulting from:\n\n\n\nThe focus in 2017 on phys
 ical and transport connectivity as a lead indicator of trade and economic 
 integration (e.g. WTO Aid for Trade Review\, work on air connectivity unde
 r the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Air 
 Transport Association\, the Global Infrastructure Connectivity Alliance In
 itiative\, the International Transport Forum Summit 2017\, and the UNCTAD 
 Review of Maritime Transport 2017).\n\n\nThe potential for Big Data to gen
 erate critical maritime transport data.\n\n\n\nRelevant issues to be consi
 dered include\, inter alia:\n\n\nIdentifying current data requirements in 
 maritime transport\nImproving understanding of the complex statistical asp
 ects of developing performance measures in maritime transport\nExploring t
 he challenges associated with organizing\, integrating and analyzing data 
 in maritime transport\nSharing good practice and experiences in the use of
  data to measure performance including in terms of connectivity\, access\,
  energy efficiency and environmental sustainability\nConsidering the poten
 tial for Big Data to generate critical maritime transport data\nEngaging w
 ith relevant data providers and considering areas of potential partnership
  and cooperation\n\n&lt\;p&gt\;The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
