SUMMARY:Geneva Dialogue: Trade in Crisis - Headwinds or Maelstrom?
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:It is clear that the multilateral trading system is in crisis\,
as indicated by the results - or lack thereof - of the last WTO Ministeri
al conference.\n\nWhile some major players are opting for economic nationa
lism\, and while the trade negotiation track is stalling\, how can we ensu
re that the achievement of the ambitious goals set in the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development is not held back?\n\nIn this context\, business as
usual is not an option. In today’s global\, interconnected\, deregulate
d\, and fast changing environment\, the consequences of the status quo wou
ld be detrimental\, in particular for the most vulnerable countries.\n\nIn
order for trade not to be lost as an enabler for development\, the intern
ational trade community needs to work together to urgently address issues
such as fisheries subsidies (SDG 14) or food security (SDG 2).\n\n\n\nWhat
role can the United Nations and its Member States play in finding consens
us on trade and development issues?\n\n\nWhere does the international trad
e community go from here\, at this uncertain time for multilateralism?\n\n
\n\nIn line with its mandate to create a better and more effective system
of international economic cooperation\, UNCTAD can provide a platform for
 collective action.\n\n* * * * * * *\n\nThe Geneva dialogue will bring toge
ther global thought leaders to tackle these questions in a thought-provoki
ng and open discussion.\n\nConvened by:\n\n\n\nDr. Mukhisa Kituyi\, Secret
 ary-General\, UNCTAD\n\n\n\nSpeakers:\n\n\n\nBaroness Valerie Amos\, Direc
tor of SOAS University of London\n\n\nMs. Anabel Gonzalez\, former Senior
