SUMMARY:ECOSOC Youth Forum 2021 session: Prospering and thriving
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Young people are navigating lost incomes\, limited social prote
ction and rising prices for essential goods and services (SDG 8) as the re
sult of COVID-19. The number of young people who are not in employment\, e
ducation or training (NEET) has increased dramatically.\n\nSocial protecti
on measures\, which are normally designed to help people in moments of cri
sis such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, rarely sufficiently address the specif
ic needs of young people. As a result\, youth worldwide are uniquely vulne
rable to the socio-economic consequences of COVID-19 and can be pushed irr
eparably into extreme poverty (SDG 1).\n\nIn the context of COVID-19\, thi
s breakout session will address key challenges young people face in fighti
ng SDG 1 (No poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). They ma
y discuss how investing in a new global deal post-COVID-19 could enable yo
ung people to live in dignity\; will ensure women have the same prospects
and opportunities as men\; and will protect the sick\, the vulnerable\, an
d minorities of all kinds.\n\nGovernment officials and youth leaders will
discuss\, elaborate and bring innovative policy ideas. #EndPoverty #Decent
