DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
  has a project promoting technology assessment in the energy and agricultu
 ral sectors in Africa to accelerate progress in science\, technology and i
 nnovation.\n\nThe Department of Science and Innovation cordially invites y
 ou to participate in a two-day workshop to prepare for South Africa&#039\;
 s participation in the UNCTAD project.\n\nTechnology assessment (TA) is ga
 ining currency among academics\, technocrats and policymakers as a powerfu
 l tool for making strategic choices about the procurement\, development\, 
 introduction\, and governance of new technologies. It entails critical and
  participatory evaluation of the social\, economic and environmental benef
 its and risks of a particular technology. While TA is still in its infancy
  in Africa\, there have been various TA-like initiatives in the health\, e
 nergy\, water and agriculture sectors\, and some related to biotechnology 
 and nanotechnology.\n\nThe UNCTAD project will seek to strengthen the capa
 cities of science\, technology and innovation policymakers and other stake
 holders in sub-Saharan Africa\, and propose policies and mechanisms to sup
 port the learning\, diffusion and adoption of technologies in the energy a
 nd agricultural sectors. This is particularly important to build resilienc
 e and facilitate recovery in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.\n\nThe 
 objectives of the workshop are as follows:\n\n\nTo help coordinate South A
 frica&#039\;s participation in the project.\nTo put together a team to par
 ticipate in the project.\nTo identify gaps in TA\, especially in agricultu
 re and energy.\nTo identify priority areas for TA in energy and agricultur
 e for South Africa.\nTo develop a workplan for South Africa&#039\;s partic
 ipation in the UNCTAD project.\nTo design South Africa&#039\;s TA methodol
 ogy in partnership with UNCTAD.\nTo mobilise existing TA capabilities in S
