SUMMARY:Webinar on macroeconomic and debt policies facing the challenges of
  tapering
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:South-South Integration - Sharing of Policy Experiences\n\nMeet
ing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is inextr
icably linked with the process of structural transformation. Macroeconomic
and financial policies are a key area in which many developing countries
face limitations in their capacity to effectively design\, manage\, coordi
nate\, implement\, and evaluate the policy levers of structural transforma
tion. South-South sharing of policy experiences can help to address this s
hortcoming and assist national capacity-building.\n\nThe recent increase i
n inflation\, which in advanced economies has attained the highest rate in
several decades\, has led to a debate on whether such elevated rates of i
nflation should be checked by “tapering”\, i.e.\, a sooner and faster
pace of scaling back asset purchases and hiking interest rates than policy
makers first thought. Economic downturns in developing countries for the l
ast decade have already been more persistent and recoveries weaker\, and t
here is now a risk that\, in a repeat of the taper tantrum of 2013\, taper
ing will cause foreign funding to dry up\, capital to flow out\, currencie
s to depreciate\, and the ability to service existing debt burdens to beco
me ever more limited. A combination of slower growth and increased vulnera
bilities could create a trade-off between supporting a weak domestic econo
my and safeguarding external sustainability\, hence undermining the possib
le achievement of the SDGs.\n\nThis event is co-organized by Policy Studie
s Institute (PSI) Ethiopia and UNCTAD. It launches the country-case studie
s on macro-financial and debt-sustainability policies that were prepared f
or Ethiopia under the UNCTAD-project “South-South Integration and The SD
Gs: Enhancing Structural Transformation in Key Partner Countries of the Be
lt and Road Initiative” and discusses their findings in the context of t
he challenges of tapering for macroeconomic and debt policies in developin
g countries. It brings together policy makers and researchers from various
developing countries and addresses a wide audience.\n\nGuiding questions
for panellists:\n\n\nWhat is the experience of Ethiopia regarding macroeco
nomic and debt policies designed to foster industrialization and structura
l transformation?\nWhat challenges does tapering pose for macroeconomic an
d debt policies in developing countries?\nWhat lessons can other developin
g countries learn from the experiences of Ethiopia\, Indonesia\, and Sri L
