SUMMARY:High-level seminar: Making electronic commerce work for development
  by connecting the dots
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The accelerated shift to digital during the COVID-19 pandemic i
s having a transformational impact on production\, consumption and trade p
atterns. While this can create opportunities and be a powerful driver of e
conomic growth\, trade and job creation\, it can also lead to widening div
ides and income inequalities between and within countries. Development gai
ns from new technologies do not accrue automatically\, nor can they be tak
en for granted. The net outcome depends on the policies and regulations ad
opted by Governments to foster productive and more inclusive use of digita
l technologies.\n\nE-commerce is booming. However\, in many developing cou
ntries\, various barriers are hampering the ability of businesses to harne
ss digital opportunities. UNCTAD’s eTrade Readiness Assessments\, implem
ented with eTrade for all partners\, propose concrete policy recommendatio
ns on how to overcome such barriers and developing countries are now actin
g upon them.\n\nStill\, much more work is needed to avoid widening divides
. Scaled up\, coordinated international support is urgently required to bo
ost the ability of countries with relatively low levels of digital readine
ss to create the policy frameworks and capabilities needed to harness e-co
mmerce and the digital economy for sustainable development\, leaving no on
e behind.\n\nThis seminar will discuss how best to leverage country assess
ments and smart partnerships to accelerate the implementation of needed po
licy actions. It will hear from the perspectives of:\n\n\nNational governm
 ents\nEntrepreneurs\nGeneva-based eTrade for all partners\nDonors\n \n\n\
