SUMMARY:Trade related aspects of the goals and target system for post-2020
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Biodiversity loss is advancing at an alarming rate\, putting ou
r entire world in danger. Currently a new post-2020 global biodiversity fr
amework (GBF) is being negotiated under the Convention on Biological Diver
sity (CBD) which aims for a transformational change to safeguard biodivers
ity. It is also crucial that the framework address underlying drivers of b
iodiversity loss which includes trade. Trade is an indispensable part of s
ustainable development and sustainable trade can contribute to achieving b
iodiversity objectives. Yet\, in the current stages of the negotiation of
the framework\, the issue of trade is not properly addressed.Under this sc
enario\, UNCTAD and the International Trade Centre (ITC) will co-organize
a session exploring the potential of trade for the post-2020 global biodiv
ersity framework and the role of voluntary sustainability standards for bi
odiversity conservation and sustainable use. It will also explore the diff
erent tools that have been developed to address the issue of trade and bio
diversity including trade data on biodiversity-based trade and a self-asse
ssment tool that can be used by companies. The session intends to provide t
he outcomes of the two trade and biodiversity webinar discussions that too
k place last year. A BioTrade partner government will also present its ref
lections on the issue. It will then be followed by an introduction of trad
e and biodiversity tools and platforms of UNCTAD and ITC that can be usefu
l and provide information to Parties for their reporting to the new global
biodiversity framework. The session will:1. Increase awareness for CBD par
ties and participants of the post-2020 lobal biodiversity framework proces
s on how sustainable trade plays a critical role in safeguarding biodivers
ity2. Disseminate the tools and platforms that can be used in the area of
trade and biodiversity. This hybrid session is part of the official side-ev
ent of the Resumed sessions of the twenty-fourth meeting of the Subsidiary
Body on Scientific\, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 24)\, the
third meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 3) and the th
ird meeting of the Open-ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Global Biodiv
ersity Framework (WG2020-3) under the CBD which will take place in Geneva\
, Switzerland. All registered participants are invited to attend the event
 . Government representatives\, international organizations\, businesses\,
academia and all interested stakeholders working in the area of trade and
biodiversity are also invited to register and join virtually. This side eve
nt is organized under the Global BioTrade Programme “Linking trade\, bio
diversity and sustainable development” with the financial support of the
Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO. Watch event recording
