SUMMARY:P166 Short Course: Frontier Technologies - Addressing widening ineq
ualities and Implementing STI policies for leaving no one behind
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Recent developments in frontier technologies\, including in art
ificial intelligence (AI)\, robotics and gene editing\, have shown tremend
ous potential for making development sustainable\, but they also have rais
ed fears of increasing disparities between the technology-haves and have-n
ots. Crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic lays bare these and other gaps.
Rapid advances can have serious downsides if they outpace the ability of s
ocieties to adapt. There are fears\, for example\, that jobs are disappear
ing as more economic activity is automated.\n\nThe implications could be s
erious for developing countries – if poor communities and countries are
either overwhelmed or simply left behind. For example\, the great divides
between countries that we see today started with the onset of the first in
dustrial revolution. Since then\, every spurt of progress was associated w
ith sharper inequality between countries. What is the impact of frontier t
echnologies on inequalities? How can governments minimize risks and maximi
ze opportunities? And how can international cooperation help? The answer t
o these questions is critical for the achievement of the SDGs.\n\nThe cour
se aims to examine how frontier technologies could widen existing inequali
ties and create new ones\, focusing on low and middle-income developing co
untries and least developed countries\, as well as on the most vulnerable
segments of societies.\n\nAt the end of the course\, delegates will have a
higher awareness of:\n\n\nThe relationship between technological change a
nd inequalities.\nThe status of key frontier technologies such as AI\, rob
 ots\, gene-editing and blockchain.\nReadiness of countries to use\, adopt
and adapt frontier technologies.\nMajor concerns and key challenges for de
veloping countries.\nExamples of strategies and policies for harnessing fr
ontier technologies leaving no one behind.\nThe role of international coop
eration.\n\n&lt\;p&gt\;Recent developments in frontier technologies\, incl
