SUMMARY:Workshop on Sustainable and Resilient Port Development to Support M
 aritime Connectivity in the Pacific
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The Asia-Pacific region has witnessed significant advances in m
aritime and port development\, resulting in many economic and social benef
its\, such as improved connectivity\, increased employment opportunities\,
industrial growth and infrastructure development.\n\nMeanwhile\, the COVI
D-19 pandemic underscored the link between maritime and port connectivity
and sustainable growth and fast-tracked the policy case for higher resilie
nce in global supply chains through improved shipping services.\n\nHowever
\, maritime and port development also brings numerous sustainability chall
enges including growing productivity pressure\, port congestion\, rising g
reenhouse gas and other emissions and other negative externalities of port
operations. Addressing these challenges requires a dedicated national str
ategy based on stakeholders’ consultations\, coordination and partnershi
p.\n\nIn this context and as part of its work on facilitating sustainable
and resilient port development to support sustainable maritime connectivit
y in Asia and the Pacific\, ESCAP - in cooperation UNCTAD - organized work
shops on Sustainable and Resilient port development to support Sustainable
Maritime Connectivity in the Pacific.\n\nThe event brought together exper
ts from the Pacific and relevant organizations to engage on a wider array
of issues relevant for strengthening and enhancing maritime connectivity i
n the Pacific.\n\nThe workshop targeting Fiji\, Papua New Guinea and Solom
on Island focused on the economic\, social and environmental aspects of ma
ritime connectivity taking into account the specific national context in s
elected countries with the aim to facilitate the exchange of views and sug
gestions on the draft national strategy on maritime connectivity issues fo
