SUMMARY:Sixth Stakeholders Steering Committee meeting for BioTrade\, Day 2
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Objective\n\nUnder the Global BioTrade programme “Linking tra
de\, biodiversity and sustainable development”\, UNCTAD is expanding the
scope to other emerging trade and biodiversity-related issues\, while ens
uring the sustainability of the BioTrade concept and the sharing of experi
ences and work implemented by different organizations. Thus\, the meeting
aims to:\n\n\nexplore additional themes and sectors like agricultural comm
odities\, bioeconomy and oceans\, circular bioeconomy and biodiversity fin
ance\, as well as new partnerships\, and\nprovide a space for partners and
other organizations to share information and build partnerships in the im
plementation of BioTrade\, including its principles and criteria.\n\n\nBac
kground\n\nThe current Global BioTrade programme “Linking trade\, biodiv
ersity and sustainable development” was launched in 2018 with the aim of
supporting the achievement of the SDGs and Aichi targets – as well as s
upporting the recently adopted Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framew
ork. The programme contributes to unfolding the potential of the BioTrade
approach for biodiversity conservation as well as poverty reduction. Curre
ntly\, the BioTrade Initiative promotes sustainable trade in approximately
  100 countries.\n\nIn October 2022\, SECO and UNCTAD agreed to a 2-year ex
tension of the current phase with focus on BioTrade but also expanding the
scope to other emerging trade and biodiversity-related issues. The overal
l objective of the continued programme is to support key stakeholders to s
eize and capitalize on trade opportunities while synchronizing and leverag
ing results from previous phases.\n\nAn essential element of the programme
has been the Stakeholders Steering Committee (SSC)\, which has annually b
rought together BioTrade partners and allowed to jointly explore key issue
s in sustainable trade and biodiversity while contributing with policy rec
ommendations to the international fora.\n\nBuilding on the successes of th
e previous SSCs\, the sixth edition of the SSC (6SCC) will represent the t
ransition to the wider conceptualized scope of work which includes new iss
ues and products related to sustainable trade and biodiversity\, including
exploring additional themes and sectors like agricultural commodities\, b
ioeconomy and oceans\, circular bioeconomy and biodiversity finance. Conco
mitantly\, the meeting will also contribute to enhancing the sustainabilit
y of the BioTrade concept and its work.\n\nThe SSC meetings are organized
under the Global BioTrade Programme “Linking trade\, biodiversity and su
stainable development” with the financial support of the Swiss State Sec
retariat for Economic Affairs SECO.\n\nParticipants\n\nBioTrade partners a
