SUMMARY:Panel discussion on leaving nobody behind: Enhancing disability inc
lusion across the international trading system
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) wil
l organize\, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finl
and\, a panel discussion entitled Leaving nobody behind: enhancing disabil
ity inclusion across the international trading system. The event will take
place on the margins of the 74th executive session of the Trade and Devel
opment Board.\n\nOne of the pillars of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Dev
elopment is the pledge to “leave no one behind” in the process of econ
omic and social development. However\, trade expansion on its own is unlik
ely to benefit the most disadvantaged groups in a country and might instea
d lead to inequitable outcomes. Global estimates suggest that 1 in 10 chil
dren and 1 in 6 adults have some type of disability and persons with disab
ilities are often unable to participate in economic life on an equal basis
.\n\nIn this context\, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland commissi
oned a research paper: Inclusive trade and persons with disabilities. This
report contributes to the promotion of a disability inclusive trade polic
y agenda by building an analytical framework that illustrates the multiple
ways in which greater trade integration can affect persons with disabilit
ies\, and by developing a definition of disability inclusive trade that ca
n be operationalized. The report summarizes key priorities and offers sugg
estions on how trade programmes could best promote the rights and well-bei
ng of persons with disabilities in the context of trade expansion.\n\nIn o
rder to launch this research\, UNCTAD will host a panel discussion\, with
participation of a wide range of stakeholders including government represe
ntatives\, intergovernmental organizations\, organizations of persons with
disabilities. The event will give the opportunity for the Geneva trade co
mmunity to react to the key priorities raised in the report and discuss ho
w trade programmes could best promote the rights and well-being of persons
with disabilities in the context of the international trading system.\n\n
The hybrid event will ensure that discussions are accessible to a wide ran
ge of geographical participants and also include accessibility features fo
r persons with disabilities\, including closed captions and sign language
 interpretation.\nhttps://unctad.org/meeting/trade-and-development-board-74
