 ster risk reduction
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) d
efines disaster as a “serious disruption of the functioning of a communi
ty or a society at any scale due to hazardous events interacting with cond
itions of exposure\, vulnerability and capacity\, leading to one or more o
f the following: human\, material\, economic and environmental losses and
impacts.\n\nHarnessing science\, technology and innovation (STI) into disa
ster mitigation\, response\, and recovery can reduce losses\, speed-up nee
 ded assistance\, and enhance long-term resilience.\n\nObjective\n\nThe wor
kshop aims to be a platform for CSTD Member States to:\n\n\nShowcase their
success stories in developing and utilizing STI in disaster risk reductio
n\, including practical application of early warning systems.\nDetermine S
TI needs of Member States.\nDetermine common challenges within and among R
egional Groups in harnessing STI for disaster risk reduction.\nProvide rec
ommendations to help Member States effectively harness STI for disaster ri
sk reduction.\n\n\nExpected Output\n\nTo identify at least three policy re
commendations on harnessing science\, technology\, and innovation for disa
ster risk reduction. \n\nA summary of the common challenges\, opportuniti
