DESCRIPTION:One objective of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Pro
 tection is to facilitate the development of independent consumer groups. C
 onsumer associations play an essential role in making the voice of consume
 rs heard in public policy decision-making\, improving consumer information
  and education\, defending consumer rights\, and monitoring markets.   
   \n \nAccording to a UNCTAD publication\, the issues of governance\, hu
 man resources and professionalization and funding are key to strengthening
  consumer associations. While the current global context is testing the re
 silience of consumer associations\, how can Governments facilitate the est
 ablishment and development of consumers associations?   \n\nThe seventh 
 session of the IGE on consumer protection requested &quot\;the UNCTAD secr
 etariat\, in accordance with guideline 97 (b)\, to prepare reports and stu
 dies as background documentation for the eighth session of the Intergovern
 mental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy on the topic
  of enhancing the consumer movement: means to facilitate the development o
 f independent consumer groups&quot\; (see report here).\n\nFrom 06-08 Dece
 mber 2023 the Consumers International Global Congress will bring together 
 the consumer movement with leading influencers from across business\, civi
 l society and academia to tackle pressing global issues and protect consum
 ers worldwide. Held every four years\, the Global Congress is a pivotal ev
 ent for those committed to improving the lives of consumers. In 2023\, mar
 ketplace actors will come together to understand the lived experience of c
 onsumers in and outside of crises and build a resilient future for people
