SUMMARY:Webinar on Consumer Protection in Multilateral Environmental Agreem
 ents (MEAs)
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:In today&#039\;s world\, the link between consumer protection a
nd environmental sustainability is stronger than ever. Multilateral enviro
nmental agreements\, such as the Basel\, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventio
ns (BRS)\, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nat
ions Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)\, focus on promoting
sustainable consumption\, managing hazardous materials and protecting ecos
ystems. These international frameworks recognise the critical role that c
onsumers play in encouraging more sustainable patterns of production and c
onsumption. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTA
 D) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are working togethe
r to align consumer information and protection policies with these multila
teral environmental agreements\, ensuring that consumer rights are respect
ed while promoting environmental sustainability.Ongoing research work has
led to the following preliminary conclusions:Multilaterals on the environm
ent\, such as the Basel and Stockholm Conventions\, can improve consumer p
rotection by reducing exposure to hazardous substances and promoting susta
inable consumption patterns.Providing clear and accessible information on
the environmental impact of products enables consumers to make sustainable
choices\, driving responsibility along value chains.Integrating consumer
protection tools such as labelling and standards with multilateral environ
mental agreements can strengthen both consumer rights and environmental su
stainability efforts. To advance both issues\, consumer protection agencies
in Member States will benefit from a deeper understanding of the intersec
tions between consumer protection and multilateral environmental agreement
s.By recognising these synergies\, agencies can develop tools\, policies a
nd frameworks that simultaneously support the implementation of these agre
ements and protect consumer rights. This integrated approach would promot
e a more sustainable\, equitable and responsible global marketplace\, ensu
ring that environmental objectives are met while safeguarding consumer int
erests.&lt\;p&gt\;In today&#039\;s world\, the link between consumer prote
