SUMMARY:COP29 Trade and Investment House event: Dialogue on investing in di
versifying critical minerals value chains for accelerating the energy tran
 sition
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:As the climate crisis intensifies\, demand for the minerals nee
ded to manufacture clean energy technologies is surging. According to the
International Energy Agency\, global demand for minerals like lithium –
vital for electric vehicles – is set to triple by 2030 and quadruple by
2040.The accelerating energy transition and rising demand for critical ene
gry transition minerals (CETMs) call for investment that goes beyond extra
ction. To ensure fair and equitable benefits for developing countries rich
in these minerals\, diversification and value addition in midstream and do
wnstream activities are essential.ObjectiveThe objective is to identify st
rategies that ensure investments in CETM-producing countries not only meet
the immediate needs of the energy transition but also contribute to their
long-term sustainability and mitigate the environmental impacts associate
d with mining. The event will examine strategies to diversify the critica
l energy transition minerals (CETM) supply chain\, as the market is expect
ed to tighten by the end of the decade\, and enhance the critical energy t
ransition minerals value chain in developing countries. This aims to meet
the growing demand driven by clean energy technologies\, ensuring inclusiv
eness and sustainability.Supporting CETM-producing developing countries to
add value to their minerals is crucial for enabling them to break free fr
om the constraints of commodity dependence and achieve long-term sustainab
le development.By focusing on upstream\, midstream and downstream diversif
ication while addressing environmental challenges\, these countries can de
velop a more integrated and resilient minerals value chain that not only i
ncreases their share of the global market but also enhances local economic
  growth.Additionally\, side-stream diversification – leveraging the by-p
roducts and associated industries of sustainable mining – can further cr
eate new opportunities across various sectors. Through value addition and
diversification\, the entire value chain becomes more resilient and scalab
le\, better equipped to meet global demand fluctuations. The session will a
lso underscore that sustainable finance is essential to developing the inf
rastructure and capacity needed to responsibly exploit\, process and add v
alue to these minerals and develop related industries along the value chai
n.Investment is essential to promote this diversification\, as it facilita
tes the development of infrastructure\, technology and skills. With these
elements in place\, resource rich countries can move beyond mere extractio
n and into the processing and manufacturing of value-added products\, such
as batteries and renewable energy components\, within their borders.Parti
cipants will discuss the importance of creating financial mechanisms that
support long-term investments in mining\, processing\, and industrial infr
astructure in developing countries.Additionally\, the session will explore
tailored investment approaches that consider the unique challenges of eac
h country\, particularly those that have rich mineral resources but lack t
he infrastructure and stable regulatory environments necessary to attract
investment.&lt\;p&gt\;&lt\;span&gt\;As the climate crisis intensifies\, de
