SUMMARY:Webinar on consumer protection in multilateral environmental agreem
ents for Eastern and Southern Africa
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:In today&#039\;s world\, the link between consumer protection a
nd environmental sustainability is stronger than ever. Multilateral enviro
nmental agreements (MEAs)\, such as the Basel\, Rotterdam\, and Stockholm
Conventions (BRS)\, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)\, and the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)\, focus on
promoting sustainable consumption\, managing hazardous materials\, and pr
otecting ecosystems. These international frameworks recognize the fundame
ntal role consumers play in fostering more sustainable production and cons
umption patterns. United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Un
ited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) are working together to align co
nsumer protection tools and policies with these multilateral environmental
agreements\, ensuring that consumer rights are upheld while promoting env
ironmental sustainability. The ongoing research has yielded the following p
reliminary conclusions:MEAs\, such as the Basel and Stockholm Conventions\
, can enhance consumer protection by reducing exposure to hazardous subtan
ces and promoting sustainable consumption patterns. Providing clear and a
ccessible information on the environmental impact of products enables cons
umers to make sustainable choices\, driving accountability across value ch
ains. Integrating consumer protection tools\, such as labelling and stand
ards\, with MEAs can strengthen both consumer rights and environmental sus
tainability efforts.Consumer protection agencies in the COMESA region stan
d to benefit from a deeper understanding of these intersections. By lever
aging the synergies between consumer protection and MEAs\, agencies can de
velop tools\, policies\, and frameworks that advance environmental goals w
hile safeguarding consumer interests. This integrated approach promotes a
sustainable\, equitable\, and responsible marketplace for the future. &l
