SUMMARY:Dialogue on inequality\, poverty and trade in Africa and the least
 developed countries
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:At the dawn of the new millennium\, developing countries achiev
ed rapid economic growth\, supporting progress on economic and social deve
lopment at the national level and a reduction in income gap between develo
ped and developing countries. However\, in many African countries and the
Least Developed Countries (LDCs)\, the commodities-driven growth was not a
ccompanied by commensurate poverty reduction\, while domestic income inequ
ality remains high.Against this backdrop\, UNCTAD and the Geneva Office of
the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) are organizing a dialogue on inequalit
y\, poverty and trade in Africa and the LDCs with a view to identifying ac
tionable policy measures to tackle inequality and poverty at the national
level. The event will be attended by government officials\, delegates of p
ermanent missions based in Geneva\, representatives of international organ
izations\, and development experts.&lt\;p&gt\;At the dawn of the new mille
