SUMMARY:INC-5.2 Pre-event: Building regional pillars for a plastics treaty
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Plastic pollution does not recognize international borders. It
can cross these borders as discarded waste\, but also as traded products t
hat do not meet standards compatible with available infrastructure and rec
overy systems to cater for their end-of-life in destination countries. Thi
s means that national regulations can only achieve so much when it comes t
o tackling plastic pollution. An emerging theme at the World Trade Organiz
ation’s Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Pl
astics Trade (WTO-DPP)\, regional cooperation and legislation aligned with
trade policy can be very effective in controlling avoidable single-use pl
astics\, as well as  supporting a transition from plastics to non-plastic
s substitutes and alternatives. This session will explore how regional appr
oaches can help tackle plastic pollution\, and how such regional action ca
n support an International Legally Binding Instrument (ILBI) on plastics p
ollution.INC-5.2 refers to the second part of the fifth session of the Int
ergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2)\, focused on developing a g
lobal legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. It is scheduled to
take place in Geneva from August 5 to 14\, 2025.  The meeting is a contin
uation of efforts to reach a global treaty to address plastic pollution\,
including in the marine environment\, following the initial INC-5 session
in South Korea in late 2024. REGISTRATIONINDICO REGISTRATION (MANDATORY F
