SUMMARY:Multi-year expert meeting on investment\, innovation and entreprene
urship for productive capacity-building and sustainable development\, 12th
  session
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Investment in artificial intelligenceThe global landscape of in
ternational production is undergoing a major restructuring\, driven by geo
political tensions\, strategic competition among major powers and a rapid
increase in artificial intelligence related investment. Firms now face a
more fragmented and politically influenced operating environment\, in whic
h cross‑border investment decisions are shaped not only by efficiency an
 d market access but\, increasingly\, by risk-management considerations rel
 ated to\, for example\, supply‑chain resilience\, technological security
\, and exposure to shifting trade barriers. At the same time\, fast‑gro
wing investment in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure is i
ntertwined with industrial policy priorities and national security concern
s\, reinforcing broader shifts in policy orientation and corporate behavio
ur. These dynamics are reflected in emerging trends in global foreign dir
ect investment\, including a move towards investment in geopolitically ali
gned and intraregional markets\, intensifying competition in strategically
important industries and accelerated supply‑chain restructuring. Toget
her\, the developments point to a more contested and fragmented global inv
estment landscape\, in which Governments rely more heavily on industrial p
olicies\, screening mechanisms and security‑related measures and in whic
h the balance between efficiency\, resilience and national security is bei
ng recalibrated. Against this backdrop\, UNCTAD seeks to clarify the scal
e and nature of the shifts\, assess their implications for developing econ
omies and propose policy considerations to guide international dialogue. In
