A traduç ão em português segue o texto em inglês.As part of UNCTAD’s technical cooperation activities for Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa and Ti mor-Leste \, two webinars on consumer protection and competition law will take place on 6 and 7 May 2026.The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) serves as the focal point within the United Nations s ystem for competition policy and consumer protection. In the context of it s technical cooperation mandate\, UNCTAD provides tailored technical assis tance and institutional capacity-building activities based on needs identi fied by beneficiary countries.Since 2021\, UNCTAD has delivered ten capaci ty-building activities\, including two in-person events. These have been s upported by voluntary contributions from the Government of Portugal\, in c ooperation with Portugal’s Directorate-General for Consumers (DGC)\, the Competition Authority (AdC)\, Brazil’s Administrative Council for Econo mic Defense (CADE) and the Secretariat for Consumers (SENACON).What the we binars will coverThe first webinar\, focusing on consumer law\, will addre ss digital enforcement\, data and new tools for consumer protection\, stre ngthening authorities’ capacity to respond to the growing role of digita l technologies.The first session will examine rights and responsibilities of digital platforms\, including data protection\, misleading advertising\ , dark patterns and emerging practices\, followed by an interactive discus sion.The second session will focus on data-driven monitoring and enforceme nt\, including the use of artificial intelligence\, market monitoring\, co mplaint platforms and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.The second webinar on competition law will explore the role of economic analysis in enforcement\, including investigative decisions\, limits in data-scarce en vironments and the integration of legal and economic assessments.It will a lso examine abuse of dominance\, including market definition in informal a nd concentrated markets\, assessment of market power with limited data\, a nd impacts on consumers\, SMEs and innovation.Why attendThese webinars are timely given the rapid evolution of consumer protection and competition f rameworks across Portuguese-speaking African countries and Timor-Leste.
