Body

Maritime transport, the backbone of global trade, is facing uncertainty and volatility. Growth slowed to 0.5% in 2025 as geopolitical tensions, rerouted shipping lanes, and rising costs reshaped global trade.

Africa is both vulnerable and strategic: while freight costs and disruptions challenge competitiveness, African ports recorded the fastest growth in connectivity, opening opportunities in transshipment, renewable energy, and critical minerals trade.

Objective

The webinar will present findings from UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2025 with a focus on Africa.

It will highlight risks to trade routes, freight rate volatility, and port disruptions, while exploring opportunities in connectivity, digitalization, low-carbon shipping, and workforce development.

The session aims to promote collaboration and strategies for resilience, sustainability, and inclusiveness in Africa’s maritime transport.

Participation

Stakeholders in the maritime industry from Africa and beyond, including policymakers, international organizations, port authorities, shipping lines, logistics providers, industry associations, academics, NGOs, and development partners.

Logistics

The webinar will be held online via Zoom, allowing broad participation across Africa and internationally.
