Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way consumers interact with markets, offering more personalized experiences, faster services, and innovative tools that can make markets work better for consumers. Yet, it also raises complex questions for regulators and enforcers: How can consumer protection authorities ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability in an age of algorithms?
Join UNCTAD for the launch of the Technical Note on Artificial Intelligence and Consumer Protection, which explores the opportunities and challenges AI brings to consumers and regulators alike. The publication highlights how AI can strengthen consumer protection—by detecting unfair practices, automating complaint handling, and supporting evidence-based enforcement—while addressing new risks such as biased outcomes, opaque algorithms, and manipulative digital designs.
The event will also introduce the Checklist for Consumer Protection Agencies Deploying AI, a practical tool designed to help authorities assess whether, when, and how to adopt AI responsibly to enhance their monitoring and enforcement functions.
