In the Pact for the Future, Member States reaffirmed the need to develop and institutionalize measures of progress that complement, or go beyond, GDP, recognizing that “sustainable development must be pursued in a balanced and integrated manner”.
Member States requested the United Nations Secretary-General to establish an independent High-Level Expert Group (HLEG) to advance the work on Beyond GDP, which was appointed on 7 May 2025.
This will be the second in-person meeting of the HLEG and is organized by UNCTAD in partnership with the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the UN Development Programme and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.
The HLEG released its interim progress report in November and now is working towards its final report that will then inform an intergovernmental process.
