Following the historic launch of the Borrowers' Platform on 15 April 2026 in Washington, D.C., the first peer learning workshop will take place in Maldives on June 15-18: a concrete demonstration the technical value of the Platform. The key learnings will be showcased in the first Governing Council Meeting of the Platform to be held in October 2026.

This workshop stands as a valuable opportunity for the senior officials responsible for debt management to exchange experiences on navigating a complex sovereign debt environment including integrating analysis to inform fiscal policy, borrowing plans, market development, and debt management strategy. It also serve as an important step toward operationalizing the peer learning mechanism of the Borrowers’ Platform and bringing its technical value to light.

The agenda of the workshop is developed collaboratively by participating countries, supported by UNCTAD as the Secretariat.

The workshop was opened by the Hon. Minister of State for Finance and Public Enterprises, Mr. Hassan Miras, and the UN Resident Coordinator in the Maldives, Mr. Hao Zhang. The United Nations in the Maldives published an article that is available on their website: "UNCTAD facilitates the Borrowers' Platform's first workshop in Maldives - a first step in fostering peer learning among borrowing countries"
