UNCTAD participation at General Assembly: Ad hoc committee on sovereign debt restructuring processes - First working session

Under UN GA Draft Resolution A/C.2/69/L.4 of 14 October 2014, UNCTAD has been entrusted with the task of sharing its expertise on sovereign debt in accordance with its general mandate. UNCTAD is the UN focal point on debt issues.

UNCTAD has been working on principles for a debt workout mechanism since 2013 and is currently elaborating a Debt Workout Roadmap that could benefit the work of the Ad Hoc Committee.

The first working session of the ad hoc committee on sovereign debt restructuring processes, established pursuant to General Assembly resolution 69/247 of 29 December 2014, will be held from Tuesday, 3 to Thursday, 5 February 2015, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

At the opening meeting on Tuesday, 3 February 2015, at 10:00 a.m., the ad hoc committee will elect its Chair and the other members of the Bureau, adopt its provisional agenda and approve its organization of work.

The provisional agenda and annotations will be issued in document A/AC.284/2015/1.

 

Submission of comments:

Pursuant to GA resolution 69/247, Member States and observers are invited to submit their comments on the necessary elements of the multilateral legal framework for sovereign debt restructuring processes no later than Friday, 23 January 2015.

Similarly, the relevant bodies and organizations of the United Nations system, as well as other relevant stakeholders with an interest in the matter, are invited to make contributions to the work entrusted to the ad hoc committee.

Comments and contributions, which will be made available electronically on the UNCTAD web site, should be sent by email to Ms. Marie Sudreau (marie.sudreau@unctad.org), and Ms. Myriam Azar (myriam.azar@unctad.org) no later than Friday, 23 January 2015.

 

Participation:

The meetings of the ad hoc committee are open to all Member States and observers of the United Nations.

Member States and Intergovernmental organizations are requested to communicate the composition of their delegations to the Secretary of the ad hoc committee, Mr. Otto Gustafik (email: gustafik@un.org) with a copy to Mr. Paolo Dua (e-mail: duap@un.org; room S-1285; fax 1-212-963-5935)

The ad hoc committee is open to Civil Society Organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, those accredited to the Financing For Development follow-up process; and those holding Observer Status at UNCTAD.
