UNCTAD15 pre-event: Trade and gender linkages – an analysis of least developed countries
08 juin 2021
14:30 - 16:00 hrs. CEST

The event will launch the joint publication by UNCTAD and the Enhanced Integrated Framework, entitled "Trade and Gender Linkages: An analysis of least developed countries". It will provide the opportunity for a high-level debate on how to make trade contribute to women's economic empowerment in the LDCs.

By discussing the links between trade policy and inclusive development, and by gathering new ideas, lessons and country perspectives on these issues, the event will provide useful insights for the UNCTAD15 ministerial conference's debate on vulnerability and inequality, and will support the process of identifying transformative approaches to trade and development.

Questions for discussion

  • What  are the gender implications of the transition from subsistence farming to commercialization and agricultural exports?
  • How has trade liberalization impacted women’s and men’s employment in extractive sectors?
  • What are the features of the “feminization of labour” in the manufacturing industry, and how do they impact trade performance?
  • How to make women emigrants from the LDCs benefit from the globalization of the care economy?
  • Which measures are necessary to ensure a gender-responsive recovery in the LDCs and which role can trade policy play to this end?

The event will be held via Zoom. It is open to the public, but registration is mandatory.

The event will be moderator by Ms. Alessandra Vellucci, Director, United Nations Information Service, Geneva. It will unfold through a conversation with five speakers followed by a debate with the audience.

  • Ms. Isabelle Durant, Acting Secretary-General, UNCTAD
  • H.E. Ms. Filson Abdulahi, Minister of Women, Children, and Youth, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
