Enhancing the "Sustainable Smart Port" status of Port Louis

As part of the project “Sustainable Smart Ports for African countries”, UNCTAD, local partners and experts will meet in Port Louis from 25 to 28 June 2024 to advance in the assessment of the Sustainable Smart Port (SSP) status of Port Louis. The objective of this assessment is to analyze the readiness of the port to:

  1. Scale up the use, production, distribution of alternative energy sources (renewable energy)
  2. Enhance energy efficiency

The SSP assessment of Port Louis is based on an UNCTAD methodology and aims to provide guidance to local stakeholders on how to enhance the SSP status of the port.

The stakeholder dialogues will kick off with bilateral meetings and culminate in a session with all key stakeholders on Friday, 28 June. These dialogues aim to discuss and validate preliminary findings of ongoing research, collect additional information, and gather insights to advance in the preparation of an action plan for the port.

Dialogues will discuss issues such as: national strategies for the port’s operations; the port’s role in the energy transition; policy priorities for energy in Mauritius and the port; and dynamics within the port such as terminal operations and port equipment.

Key stakeholders participating in these dialogues include, among others, the Mauritius Port Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, the Cargo Handling Cooperation Ltd, the Central Electricity Board, shipping lines and terminal operators.
