ISO 50001 energy management systems to promote sustainable practices and
energy efficiency in African ports
As part of the UNCTAD project “Sustainable Smart Ports for African Countries” UNCTAD, ISO and representatives from ports of Tanger Med (Morocco), Port Louis (Mauritius), and Tema (Ghana), along with local stakeholders and ISO experts, will convene on 29 and 30 October 2024 for an online training on the ISO 50001 standard to learn about ways to enhance energy efficiency in ports.
This training aims to strengthen capacity of ports and local relevant stakeholders in the development and implementation of energy management systems in accordance with ISO 50001, thereby fostering sustainable energy practices and improving energy efficiency.
Concretely, this event will help ports to:
- Increase understanding of ISO 50001 and its benefits, including energy cost reduction, greenhouse gas emissions minimization.
- Provide detailed knowledge about the requirements and characteristics of ISO 50001, focusing on its applicability to port operations.
- Equip stakeholders with practical insights into developing and implementing a Port Energy Management Plan (PEMP) in accordance with ISO 50001 guidelines.
- Emphasize the importance of stakeholder collaboration and data requirements for successful ISO 50001 implementation.
The virtual awareness-raising session will have a duration of six hours (2 days of 3 hours), facilitated by ISO experts:
- On Day 1 (29 October), the session will introduce ISO 50001, covering its requirements and benefits of implementing it in port operations while highlighting the critical role of people and management as key success factors.
- On Day 2 (30 October), the session will focus on technical indicators of energy performance management, using practical examples and real data from the ports present.
Key stakeholders participating in these dialogues include, among others, the Mauritius Port Authority, Tanger Med Port Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, the Mauritius Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, cargo handling operators, electricity providers, and terminal operators and representatives from ISO National Standard bodies.
By invitation only, this activity is limited to a specific number of participants.
Liam has been working on energy management systems in Ireland since 2005 and internationally since 2011 as the Lead International industrial energy efficiency expert with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) working on the development and delivery of EnMS capacity building. He has worked with UNIDO in South Africa, Malaysia, Moldova, Russia, North Macedonia, Georgia, Iran and Ukraine.
He studied Marine Engineering initially and later achieved a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). The first decade of Liam's career was spent as a sea-going marine engineer. This was followed by over a decade as an energy manager in the pharmaceutical industry. Since 2001, he has worked as an energy management and decarbonisation consultant.
He has been UNIDO expert on the ISO Technical Committee that developed ISO 50001 and its supporting standards. He has been the lead author on a number of Guidebooks on implementing energy management systems and has led numerous successful implementations of EnMS compliant with ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems.
He has worked with UNIDO in South Africa, Malaysia, Moldova, Russia, North Macedonia, Georgia, Iran and Ukraine.
He has developed training programs on behalf of ISO that have been delivered to energy experts in over 100 countries globally. He was also the Course Director for the European Defence Agency supporting the implementation of energy management systems throughout the defence forces of the EU.
He has spoken at energy conferences in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas about energy management, energy efficiency and energy performance measurement.
Luis has worked in the sustainability field since 2006 focused on the use of advanced data analytics, normalised indicators, and related monitoring tools, in order to evaluate energy performance improvement and decarbonisations processes.
He is a Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP) accredited by AEE (Association of Energy Engineers and performance Measurement and Verification Analyst by EVO (Efficiency Valuation Organization).
Since 2014, he had also collaborated with UNIDO as an International Energy Performance Indicator expert, leading data analysis and performance monitoring in Energy Management System implementation projects. In this field, he is the main author and trainer in the UNIDO program.
During the last 10 years, Luis has delivered training programs for different organisations like in different countries: Ireland, Spain, Austria, Russia, Georgia, Iran, Moldova.
