Intellectual property and investment in public health
UNCTAD contributes to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by:
- Building capacity in developing countries on the use of appropriate investment and intellectual property (IP) frameworks to promote partnerships and the transfer of emerging technologies, e.g. pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, clean energy, information and communication technologies.

IP implications of big data solutions and artificial intelligence and the application to public health.

- Promoting cooperation on investment to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), considering the specific situation in developing countries and the need to prevent stockouts of essential generic antimicrobial treatments.
- Mandate

The UNCTAD Secretariat implements a work programme on the development dimensions of intellectual property (IP) rights in response to a mandate from Member States at the Ministerial Conference in Nairobi, Kenya (2016), and requests in the WIPO Development Agenda and the World Health Assembly´s Resolution 61.21 on a Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property.
The IP programme conducts research and analysis on trade and development aspects of IP, provides request-based technical assistance and facilitates consensus-building in international discussions on issues at the interface of investment and intellectual property.
