Trade, poverty, and inequalities

The primary development challenge facing UN member states is how to combat poverty and inequalities both within and between countries.

Objectives

We provide technical assistance to Africa, the least developed countries, and other vulnerable developing countries to better harness the potential of trade in reducing poverty and inequality.

Our research and technical support focus on the following areas:

  • Identifying gaps in the trade-poverty nexus: We analyse and address the missing links between trade and poverty reduction outcomes.
  • Understanding drivers of poverty and inequality: Our efforts include a comprehensive assessment of the underlying factors contributing to poverty and inequality, along with the formulation of effective policies to combat these issues.
  • Mainstreaming distributional concerns in policy design: We aim to enhance awareness and knowledge-sharing around the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating distributional considerations into national policy frameworks and implementation strategies.
