UNCTAD carried out consultations on the UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection among representatives of governmental consumer protection agencies attending the Iberoamerican Forum of Governmental Consumer Protection Agencies (FIAGC) in Bogotá, Colombia on 27-29 August.
The eighth Iberoamerican Forum of Governmental Consumer Protection Agencies (FIAGC)
devoted a session to discussing the revision of the UN Guidelines on Consumer Protection on 29 August.Representatives from UNCTAD presented a draft report containing the results of four working groups on e-commerce, financial services, other issues, and implementation, as well as on the "modalities" for the proposed revision.
Additionally, Ms. Altagracia Paulino, Director of Proconsumidor of the Dominican Republic, presented the contribution of Ibero-American (Spanish and Portuguese speaking) countries to the revision process, which is contained in the draft report.
The resulting Bogotá Declaration, signed by all the consumer protection agencies present, established a working group to contribute to the revision process and to follow up with permanent missions in Geneva so as to ensure the consideration of Ibero-American views in the adoption of a proposed revision.
The Bogotá Declaration also proposed the creation of a United Nations Forum on Consumer Protection.
