Workshop on developing an effective strategy for international investment agreements (IIAs) reform for Egypt

As part of its technical assistance work, UNCTAD regularly provides support to countries in reviewing their existing international investment agreements (IIAs). At the request of Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), UNCTAD is co-organizing a workshop on developing an effective strategy for IIA reform.

The event discussed the reform of the IIA regime through a modernization of the existing stock of bilateral investment treaties. It also provided recommendations on how to better align IIAs with sustainable development and climate goals, and discussed options to minimize the risk of investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS) claims.
