UNCTAD and ASEAN identify critical issues in harmonizing e-commerce laws

Senior Southeast Asian officials assessed cyber-legislation and made recommendations for the harmonization of e-commerce laws at a joint ASEAN/UNCTAD workshop held in Cebu, the Philippines, on 10 and 11 November 2012. The outcome was reported to the twelfth ASEAN Telecommunications Senior Officials’ Meeting (TELSOM).
UNCTAD taking surveys for e-commerce legal harmonization in ASEAN

Together with the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Senior Officials (TELSOM) Working Groups, UNCTAD is currently undertaking a review of e-commerce laws harmonization in the ten member countries of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Surveys have been sent to the member Governments and the private sector.
Experts in Bangkok to discuss ways to measure e-commerce and support ICT policies

At the 10th World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Meeting (WTIM) in Bangkok, Thailand on 26 September, UNCTAD will be leading a discussion between ministries of ICT, national statisticians and international organizations on how e-commerce measurement can support ICT policies.

In the run up to the Rio+20 UN sustainable development summit, the United Nations Group on the Information Society (UNGIS), which is currently chaired by UNCTAD, organized a side-event on "ICTs: The foundation of our sustainable future" at the RioCentro in Rio de Janeiro on 17 June to focus attention on the catalytic role of ICTs in meeting development goals.

Mobile money – the use of cell phones for money transfers, payments and more sophisticated financial activities such as credit, savings, and insurance – is increasingly popular in East Africa but could benefit from region-wide rules to coordinate and harmonize regulations, a new UNCTAD study says.
