Madagascar adopts UN development framework for 2015-2019; plan includes UNCTAD assistance

25 June 2014

UNCTAD and the UN Inter-Agency Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity will “work as one” with the government of Madagascar to boost trade and economic growth on the island.

Prime Minister Roger Kolo of Madagascar, together with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the country, Ms. Fatma Samoura and representatives of relevant United Nations agencies, have signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Madagascar in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

During the ceremony, held at the prime minister's office in the Mahazoarivo Palace on 10 June 2014, UNCTAD was represented by Ms. Samoura.

The adoption of the UNDAF for 2015-2019 decisively strengthens the partnership between the government of Madagascar and the United Nations system. It will contribute to the pursuit of national reconciliation, the consolidation of democracy, good governance, respect for human rights, and for the promotion of inclusive and equitable economic growth in Madagascar, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon wrote in a statement included in the preface of the document.

UNCTAD, together with the United Nations Inter-Agency Cluster on Trade and Productive Capacity is expected to play a major role in the implementation of the UNDAF. It will contribute in particular to "pillar one", which focuses on inclusive growth and sustainable development.

During June 2014, a fund-raising strategy was also initiated at the national level to support the effective implementation of the UNDAF, starting in January 2015. The exercise, led by the Malagasy government and the office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator, involves the entire United Nations country team including non-resident agencies such as UNCTAD.
